A busload of Asian American homecare workers, family and friends traveled October 6 from Chinatown in lower Manhattan to Philadelphia, PA as part of 1199SEIU’s Weekend Warrior election canvassing program.
Because the registration deadline for Pennsylvania voters was October 9, the canvassers concentrated on voter registration. They distributed flyers and set up tables in South Philadelphia, North Philadelphia and the city’s Chinese-American community.
Many of the participants took part in workshops conducted by Asians for Obama in preparation for the outing. Of the several hundred people the canvassers spoke to, they were able to register some 50 new voters.
Home attendant Xiao Ping Hu brought along her mother, Xiu Chan Hu, who at 86 was the oldest canvasser.
“All the members, friends and family members said they enjoyed the afternoon,” said 1199SEIU VP David Ho, who accompanied the group. “They said that they want to return to help get out the vote for President Obama.”
