safeStaffing_feat.jpgMore than 1,500 healthcare workers from across New York packed the West Capitol Park in Albany for a rally in support of two bills that address a “patient care crisis” in the state. The Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act and the Safe Patient Handling Act would create safe nurse-to-patient staffing ratios for acute care facilities, and a statewide safe patient-handling policy.

ferncliff_feat.jpg1199SEIU members at Ferncliff Nursing Home in New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley were angry and unwilling to simply sit back when they learned about the discriminatory action of their employer. “The environment at a nursing home and the dedication and hopefulness of the caregivers are critical to the health and well-being of the residents,” said Darrell Sherman, a union delegate.

AlbanyNH_feat.jpgThe Albany County Central Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO (ACCFL) and the Capital District Area Labor Federation (CDALF) have been mobilizing their members and calling upon county legislators to stand with 1199SEIU healthcare workers in the fight against the privatization of the Albany County Nursing Home in New York’s capital city.

vassar_feat.jpgSince the first group of workers at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY, organized and fought to become 1199 members more than four decades ago in 1972, the health care workers at this Mid-Hudson Valley hospital have taken on many fights to protect their contract and strengthen their union.
