iSpeak: Anti-Civil Right Initiatives

Barack Obama’s victory is undeniably one of the most culturally and politically significant events in U.S. history. Millions of Americans moved the nation forward by voting for an African-American who wants to bring change as the president of the United States.

Yet, in a few states, voters supported ballot initiatives that many say are anti-civil rights. In California, Florida and Arizona voters approved initiatives banning their state constitutions from recognizing gay marriages or same-sex relationships of any kind. And in Arkansas voters agreed to bar unmarried couples and single people from adopting or becoming foster parents.

Why do you think an Obama supporter would vote yes for these measures? Is it possible to consider oneself progressive and still support these measures?

I think that it is shameful to deny marriage to two people of any sexual preference, or race who love each other! What is so sacred about only granting marriage to a woman and a man?  Why are we afraid of men loving men and women loving women?

I think that if an Obama supporter voted yes to banning gay marriage, it was because of religious beliefs. In some religions practiced around the world, it is simply not accepted because of what their higher power has taught them. Many Obama supporters that voted yes to ban gay marriage did so on the belief that God ordained a marriage between a man and a woman. Supporting gay marriage would be redefining marriage.

As for Arkansas voting to ban unmarried/single people from adopting, this is based on one’s belief of what a family should be. Again, this is all on one’s religious beliefs and should be respected. I understand the need for the gay community to feel accepted but there are a lot of religious people who will not go against their higher power just to make homosexuals feel accepted.

We shouldn’t ask how someone can elect Obama but then vote for Proposition 8. The question is how homosexuals can work with different religious groups to get what they seek.

I would like to believe that in a state like Arkansas, there is a lack of education as to why people are Gay.  There is a general lack of understanding because the medical community such as the AMA, does not publish information about being Gay is a genetic issue.

Unfortunately, there is a still large population who believe that Gays can be changed with psychological retraining. These people believe that being Gay is a choice or something that can be controlled if they really want to change.

As a former Californian living in Massachusetts, I was devastated at the passing of the bill. It was bad enough that the state voted in Arnold Schwarzenneger. My home state, which was known for being progressive, has become a place I am no longer proud of.  As a former performer, I was very active with the Gay community back home in Santa Cruz, CA. where people being Gay is an accepted way of life.  I have been wondering how my community voted on this bill.

I am proud to see people protesting this terrible setback for the rights of people who have fought so hard to be accepted just like everyone else. I have watched friends pass away with their life partners unable to be a part of the final process, just because they were not married and the hospital denied the partner from being at the bedside at the passing.  This is just so wrong. Wake up, people, and do the right thing.

I strongly believe in the universal institution of marriage as husband and wife, man and woman. If a gay couple wants their rights to union enforced, there are other legal ways to do it. But morally speaking, it should not be by marriage. A legal arrangement should be enough, if they want legal protection. It is not healthy for this society to call it same sex marriage
