Ultimately, when the government fails the people, it is the people’s responsibility to provide what is needed for those the government ignores. It is plainly clear to me and many Americans that the government does not care for the residents of the lower 9th ward and similar communities. We in the labor movement should be the ones who step up, along with non-profits and charity organizations and use all the tools we picked up from politics and organizing. to get these hospitals and houses for the workers built and running.

We can send resources 24 hours after the 2004 Tsunami, but a year after Katrina our government has still not stepped up and committed resources, expertise, and support necessary to rebuild New Orleans. Bush and his cronies have no interest in seeing New Orleans rebuilt because it is a majority African-American city and a cultural center that does not support his agenda.
