1199SEIU members from Maryland and the District of Columbia are traveling to Virginia as part of the union’s Weekend Warriors program to re-elect President Barack Obama. Each weekend, several dozen members volunteer their time to knock on doors and help convince voters in this important swing state to cast their ballot for the President on November 6.
The Weekend Warriors are fired up. Gail Kingman, an RN at Civista Medical Center, said her reasons for supporting the President were simple, “It’s personal. Healthcare is such an important issue to me, both because of my work and for my family.”
Demetrius Smith, a nutrition tech at Prince George’s Hospital, said, “I’m definitely in Obama mode,” said Smith. She volunteered extensively to elect President Obama in 2008, and explained why she’s back: “We’ve got to keep him in there. He’s still got work to do. And it’s harder this time around. We’ve got to motivate folks and make sure they know they still have to vote.”
“All the people I talked to were friendly, and I think they really appreciate hearing from us – the people who deliver healthcare,” said Ms. Kingman, who will definitely be back out talking to voters before the election on November 6.
1199ers who want to become Weekend Warriors should speak with their Delegates and Organizers.
