February 13, 2008

1199 SEIU members rejoiced and celebrated Donna Edwards’ Primary victory over Rep. Al Wynn in Maryland’s 4th congressional district. With a wide margin of victory of almost 25 percentage points, Edwards is on her way to become the first African-American woman from Maryland to serve in Congress. The union trumpeted the victory as vindication of their criticism of several of Wynn’s controversial votes including his 2002 Iraq War vote, his vote to repeal the estate tax and his support for a bill that made it more difficult for people to file for bankruptcy. 1199’s level of activism in the race and its work with a coalition of labor unions and national progressive organizations were closely watched by political analysts and the media. Hard not to say "we told you so."

PCAs have no sick days, no vacation days, and no way to take a day off when a family member is ill or dies.
