In 1986, when Robin Bryant began working at what is now Blue Point Nursing Home in Baltimore, her starting salary was $3.85 an hour. A Geriatric Nursing Assistant, Robin had a run-in with the boss and feared termination. “I decided to get more involved with my Union and was inspired to become a Delegate,” she says.
“At the time I didn’t realize how much the union made a difference in my quality of life. It was a matter of respect, which I felt the Union demanded for the members. I am a very active delegate and committed to the Union’s belief that we are ‘Stronger Together’.
“I believe the Union becomes more powerful with the increasing of membership. That’s why I try to recruit non-Union workers by having discussions on how crucial it is for them to be a Union member. I have learned by working with other Union members that we are in all fights together, whether it is for a nursing home or hospital.
“I honestly can say that I have a full understanding on how politics affects my life and why it is a driving force for me. I am always explaining to the members how important it is to understand that when there is a cut in Medicaid or Medicare, this affects not only our patients but also workers’ wages and jobs. I believe we must stay consistent by making politicians aware of the fact that we are watching what they attempt to do by making unfair cuts that can affect our lives, and we are not going to accept it! These are only a few reasons why I love my Union. I will always be dedicated to the cause of fighting for fair wages, healthcare and respect for all workers!
