1199SEIU Florida Members Call for Special Session on Healthcare Expansion at Town Hall with State Legislators

January 1, 1970

1199SEIU Florida caregivers joined healthcare expansion champions State Senator Dwight Bullard (D-Miami) and State Representatives Perry Thurston (D-Ft. Lauderdale), Kionne McGhee (D-Miami) and Barbara Watson (D-Miami Gardens) to talk about the morally and fiscally irresponsible decision by Florida House leaders to deny healthcare expansion to 1.2 million hardworking Floridians.

The healthcare expansion town hall at the Second Baptist Church in Richmond Heights in Miami-Dade County was attended by about 60 community leaders, as well as many organizations who are continuing to fight for real healthcare expansion.

Joining the state legislators and 1199SEIU Florida political director Roxey Nelson on the panel were Denise Glass from SEIU Local 1991, United Teachers of Dade, Florida Legal services, CHI Health Clinic and a representative from Second Baptist Church.

All panelists in attendance highlighted the fact that if the Florida Legislature does not accept our $51 billion in federal tax dollars for healthcare expansion, it will simply go to other states when we desperately need it here in Florida to help cover the nearly 4 million Floridians without health insurance.

The panelists also reiterated the need to keep the pressure on Governor Rick Scott and all state legislators to support a special session to accept our federal tax dollars and pass healthcare expansion.
