HCSG Nursing Home Caregivers in Florida Picket to Stop Cuts to Work Hours

January 1, 1970

More than 150 caregivers, elected officials, Consulate residents and community supporters took to the streets on Thursday, August 8 to protest shorter work weeks for dietary and housekeeping workers employed by HCSG, a subcontracting company, at Consulate-owned nursing home facilities in Florida.

Chanting “Eight hours is what we need for proper care and time to feed!” and “When they say cut back, we say fight back!” caregivers picketed for hours under the blazing summer sun in front of Rio Pinar Health Care and Rosewood Health & Rehab in Orlando, Renaissance Health & Rehab in West Palm Beach and Heritage in Venice to let the company know 1199SEIU caregivers are not backing down until they get their eight hour day back!

In addition to marching on four picket lines, two hundred workers delivered more than 1,000 signatures last week to Consulate demanding they address the caregivers concerns regarding unsafe staffing, shorter work days and unaffordable health care.

Negotiations resumed Tuesday, Aug. 14 - Wednesday, August 15 where workers are demanding Consulate bring back the eight hour work week for all of its employees, offer higher raises and address caregivers’ staffing concerns.
