New York, NY- The early morning of Saturday, April 29th will see a beehive of activity in 10 locations as healthcare workers from throughout the New York City area get on buses to travel to the People’s Climate March in Washington, DC. The workers, members of 1199SEIU, are adding their voices to the hundreds of thousands of Americans calling for environmental justice and an end to government subservience to the fossil fuel industry and climate deniers.
More than 125 workers at the hospital in Irving, NY, are now members of the state’s largest and fastest growing healthcare union.
New York, NY- As people from around the country make plans for a massive, historic Climate March on April 29, 1199SEIU is both proud and humbled to partner with the Indigenous Environmental Network in sponsoring ground transportation to the March from several locations in the upper Midwest. The IEN played a leadership role in resisting the construction of both the Dakota Access and Keystone XL pipelines, struggles that are ongoing. The 1199SEIU sponsorship will allow many indigenous people who might not have been able to attend the march to add their voices to the hundreds of thousands making a profound statement on April 29. Nursing home workers at Elderwood at Grand Island in Grand Island, NY unanimously voted Thursday to issue notice to management of their intent to conduct an informational picket on Friday, April 28. The action comes six months after more than 100 LPNs, CNAs, and service employees at the facility voted to join 1199SEIU, United Healthcare Workers East. Since then, the Employer has refused to recognize the Union and has not responded to repeated requests from 1199SEIU representatives to begin negotiations. Read More
