Affordable Housing

As the housing crisis intensifies, working people are finding it increasingly difficult to find a place to live. Too many 1199ers, for example, are unable to live in or near the neighborhoods where they provide care. And for those who own homes, some continue to pay off loans on underwater mortgages.

1199SEIU has always sought to assist members in securing fair, affordable housing. The National Benefit Fund in New York City conducts workshops to assist members who wish to purchase a home, co-op or condominium in securing affordable, low-interest mortgages.

In New York, our union is working with Mayor Bill de Blasio, whose affordable housing plan is one of, if not the most ambitious affordable housing proposals in the country. Our union also works with a coalition of community-based organizations, tenant associations and labor unions to halt skyrocketing monthly rents and increase affordable housing.
