1199 Members Vie for County Leg Seats in Upstate New York

April 11, 2013

On Election Day, 1199SEIU members in Upstate New York will have extra incentive to get out and cast their vote for two fellow 1199 members in Onondaga County. Long-time 1199 Chairperson at Rosewood Nursing Home, Monica Williams, is running for re-election to her Onondaga County Legislature seat in the 16th District, representing many of members who live in the South Side of Syracuse. And 1199 member Maggie Mahoney will vie to defeat the Majority Chair of the Legislature, Pat Kilmartin, in District 11, representing Nedrow, the Town of Onondaga and parts of Camillus.

A Syracuse native, Monica Williams has dedicated her life to caring for our most vulnerable and elderly citizens at Rosewood Heights. In her six years as County Legislator, Monica has fought to create jobs, improve community access to healthy food, and reinstitute a Citizen’s Review Board in Syracuse.

Maggie Mahoney was born in Nedrow, grew up on Onondaga Hill, and graduated from Onondaga Central High School. As an 1199er and a former Vice President of the Greater Syracuse Labor Council, Maggie has committed her life to advocating for working men and women. Once elected, Maggie pledges to be the members’ voice on the Onondaga County Legislature, and to focus on quality, affordable healthcare and good jobs for all, helping family farms and maximizing the economic potential of Onondaga Community College.

In an election where turn out is projected to be low, 1199SEIU members can definitely make a difference. Polls are open Tuesday, November 5 from 6am until 9pm.
