Central NY Nurse Council and 1199 Training Fund Host College Fair

May 29, 2013

There has never been a better time to go back to school. The “1199 Healthcare Workers College Fair” on May 8, sponsored by 1199SEIU, the Central NY Nurse Council, and the 1199 Training and Education Fund, gave members and their loved ones the opportunity to meet local college representatives and learn about the educational opportunities available to them right away.

“I enjoyed getting information from college reps firsthand,” said R. Craig, a Rosewood member, “This event has helped me make my decision about which school to apply to.”

Attendees to this event held a wide variety of job titles and future aspirations--RNs who want to complete a BSN, LPNs who want to become RNs, CNAs who want to pursue higher education, and friends and family who want to get started on a healthcare career path.

Prospective student Carol Spivey, a CNA at the Jewish Home of CNY, came to the college fair looking to chart her course for the future. “It was very helpful to learn about opportunities for further education. I learned that OCC is a great place to start!”

Representatives from OCC (Onondaga Community College) were in attendance along with several other colleges including: SUNY Upstate, Keuka College, Le Moyne College, Oswego State, Excelsior College, Utica College, Cayuga Community College, Crouse School of Nursing, SUNY Morrisville, and others. Training and Upgrading Fund staff was also on hand to get members signed up for this important union benefit. College Fair organizers say the event was a success and are looking forward to hosting the fair again next year.
