1199ers Stand With Airport Workers As Part of a National Day of Action

January 23, 2015

Last Thursday, January 15th – as part of a National Day of Action to stand up for airport workers on the late Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday – 1199ers joined ReadyJet employees at Logan Airport’s Chapel to stand for respect and dignity in the workplace. 1199SEIU members joined workers from the fast food, transportation and other industries as well as allies from faith and community groups to ask ReadyJet to respect their employees’ rights and pay them a fair wage.

Jose Candelario, a 20-year-old from Chelsea, was recently fired from ReadyJet on New Year’s Eve for joining his coworkers in effortsto form a union with SEIU Local 32BJ. Since last January, around 70 people, or one third of the work force, have been fired by ReadyJet. As caregivers, we understand that coming together with other workers is the only way we can all win.

“I’m here today as a home care worker, wearing my fast food strike shirt, supporting the Logan Airport workers…we’re all in this together and we will win!” said Frankie Cook, a Personal Care Attendant from Dorchester, MA and a member of 1199SEIU.

The action on January 15th was the first of the #WageAction coalition’s ongoing Fight for $15 in 2015 campaign. 1199SEIU members are proud to be a part of this coalition, joining dozens of other unions, community, and faith organizations in Massachusetts. There will be actions on the 15th of every month this year to support the #Fightfor15 the Bay State. To learn more about #WageAction, visit the website here.
