Massachusetts

On Thursday, March 22, 1199SEIU members across Massachusetts joined with members of several other unions to rally outside of Verizon stores across the Bay State.

Verizon has made billions of dollars in profits and even paid its top executives $283 million, but has consistently told its 45,000 workers that it is broke. 1199SEIU members and their allies stood up on behalf of Verizon workers for a national day of action to protest Verizon’s treatment of its employees, who have simply asked for a fair contract. Verizon has also avoided paying its fair share in taxes and has even proposed drastic cutbacks on their workers.

Victoria Entzminger, an 1199SEIU personal care attendant who attended a Verizon protest in Boston, said that it is vitally important to stand with Verizon workers, even though they may not work in the same field as 1199SEIU members.

“To me, [the Verizon workers] are like family. Even though we don’t know each other, if we can be supportive of them, they can be supportive of us,” she said. “There needs to be a connection to unite for the same cause.”

1199SEIU members also protested outside of Verizon stores in Plymouth and Hyannis.
