Immigration Rally Draws 1199SEIU Members in Support of Comprehensive Reform

April 23, 2013

BOSTON - In April, 1199SEIU members attended an energetic rally in historic Faneuil Hall in the heart of Boston that drew more than 800 people. The rally’s theme centered on the need for comprehensive immigration reform that allows all immigrants a clear, equitable path to citizenship.

The mid-morning rally packed Faneuil Hall and elected officials such as U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congressman Joe Kennedy III spoke about the importance of embracing the immigrant population and making sure that no matter where you’re from, you are given the same opportunity to become a citizen.

“It’s only when we work together that we make the real change we need to make,” said Senator Warren to the crowd.

“Right now we have the moment, we have the opportunity to change it. We cannot let up for a minute,” said Congressman Kennedy, emphasizing the need for all residents, citizens or not, to stand up and hold our elected officials to a divisive plan to address immigration reform.

Several speakers addressed the crowded hall and spoke about their personal experiences as immigrants to this country and the need for a clear process for all immigrants to become citizens.

After the speaking program, a march was held throughout downtown Boston. The rally ended at the JFK Federal Building near Boston City Hall. A short speaking program was held and march participants laid down roses at the steps of the building to commemorate the 11 million foreign-born immigrants who currently live in the United States.

“The rally was great. I really enjoyed it. It was terrific. Elizabeth Warren was great. I really had a good time,” said Brian Johnson, an 1199SEIU member at Boston Medical Center. “Immigration reform is good for everyone. [I have relatives who] would be excellent citizens here and would be able to contribute to our economy. They are willing to work and pay their taxes. The immigration process is so much red tape. Comprehensive immigration reform would stop people from getting taking advantage of.”
