Your zipcode should not determine the quality of care. Over time, Medicaid and Medicare funding has failed to keep up with increased costs. We thank the Legislature for enacting the Health Care Transformation Fund last year, which is providing for Medicaid rate increases for the first time in 10 years. There is an opportunity to build on that progress this year by increasing the Medicaid Global Cap by 3.6%. In addition, the Legislature should insure that any reforms to the Indigent Care Pool should not harm the safety net institutions, including private ones, that care for the uninsured and Medicaid patients.

New York, NY- 1199SEIU and a number of elected officials today launched a concerted effort to protect both recipients of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) as well as young people born in this country of undocumented parents (Dreamers). There are approximately 300,000 TPS recipients, including 26,000 New Yorkers. Many are Haitians, displaced by the devastating earthquake of 2009. 1199SEIU Secretary-Treasurer Maria Castaneda says deporting these recipients is sending them back to a country unable to absorb them. “Haitians who came after the 2009 earthquake have integrated into our communities, and have made positive contributions to our life and culture. Many have children. Terminating TPS means separating families, something the federal government has no business doing. The Dreamers are young people who have skills this economy needs, and they should be allowed to stay and pursue a path to legalization.”
Following the completion of campus consolidation, we are now preparing to bargain our next contract as our current contract expires on June 15, 2019! We need to elect a bargaining committee and determine our priorities for negotiations. Our current contract has strong language and benefits which we want to build upon as well as incorporate new concerns and priorities. The 1199SEIU bargaining unit includes more than 1,600 Registered Nurses.
