Florida House Speaker and Senate President Greeted at Community Event by Protestors Calling for Special Session on Healthcare Expansion

January 1, 1970

As state legislators make the rounds in their districts speaking to constituents about what they worked on during the 2013 legislative session in Tallahassee, Floridians across the state continue to express outrage that legislators failed to expand healthcare for 1.2 million hardworking Floridians.

Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford (R-Wesley Chapel) and Senate President Don Gaetz (R-Panama City) on Thursday were greeted by a group of protestors, including several members of 1199SEIU Florida, at a community event in Central Florida holding signs that read, “Healthier Florida Now” and “Have a Heart”.

Another protestor called on Speaker Weatherford to not let our federal tax dollars go to other states that are set aside for healthcare in Florida while holding a giant, oversized check in the amount of $51 billion made out to the other forty-nine states from Speaker Weatherford.

This week, Health News Florida also reported that State Senator Aaron Bean (R-Jacksonville) has been getting an earful from constituents upset about his position on healthcare expansion:

"Since the session ended without an expansion of health care for low-income Floridians, Bean has gotten some complaints from constituents. 'I've already been chewed out, I've been yelled at ... by a handful of folks that just disagree with my philosophy,' Bean said."

Floridians across the state want a special session to expand healthcare to 1.2 million hardworking Floridians and its becoming clear that legislators will continue to hear from constituents until they do the right thing.
