1199 is DC strong through federal overreach
August 27, 2025
Members of the National Guard, Customs and Border Patrol, the FBI, and others are patrolling DC as part of Donald Trump's attempted authoritarian power grab over the city.
The following resources can help members stay safe:
- CASA: know your rights if you are approached by ICE
- DC AG Schwalb: FAQs For individuals living in homeless encampments in DC
Remember, the status of DC's occupation is changing regularly. Donald Trump's federal takeover of MPD began August 10 and runs until September 10. At that time, he will need Congress's approval to retain control for another 30-day period.
ICE has been spotted near DC schools, but so far, there haven't been public reports of ICE inside any schools.
Remember, federal law enforcement officers are usually not allowed to enter non-public areas of schools without a warrant. If an officer cites "exigent circumstances"—any situation in which the officer believes someone's life is in danger, destruction of evidence is occurring, or a suspect is fleeing—they can enter without a warrant.
There’s a lot going on in the District right now, and it’s a scary time for many of us. 1199 remains committed to supporting our members in DC in any way possible.
