1199 Members and Supporters Rallied at Baltimore's New Amazon Fulfillment Center

January 31, 2015

More than 100 1199 members and supporters rallied at Baltimore's new Amazon fulfillment center, calling for higher wages and family sustaining jobs in Baltimore City. We challenged Baltimore City elected officials and employers to promote policies to create jobs that pay at least $15 per hour, jobs that pay a family sustaining wage and help low-income families move forward. We chose the Amazon fulfillment center for our Fight for $15 event as a symbol of the poor quality jobs that have received significant taxpayer subsidies. Baltimore City and the State of Maryland gave $43 million in tax incentives to Amazon to open a fulfillment center in the city. Most of the jobs are temporary, however, offering no benefits or guarantee of full time employment. Media reports from other fulfillment centers across the country detail punishing work, difficult schedules and little opportunity for full-time employment.- See more at: http://www.1199seiu.org/1199_members_and_supporters_rallied_at_baltimore_s_new_amazon_fulfillment_center#sthash.LuvN95S7.dpuf
