More Than 400 People Attend Fundraising Event for Haiti

December 10, 2012

On December 2, hundreds of people attended a fundraising program at the union hall in Boston in support of Haiti. The organization “What’s Mine is Yours” held its sixth annual fundraising concert and was sponsored by the 1199SEIU Haitian Caucus this year.

“What’s Mine is Yours” is a charitable organization that has been in existence since 2007 and every year the organization leads missionary trips for the purpose of distributing donations including first aid items, toiletries, and medical supplies. This year’s fundraiser was particularly important as large amounts of materials had been collected, but the cost of shipping the materials is quite high. The largest donations came from Good Samaritan Medical Center, which donated several hospital beds. Volunteers from “What’s Mine is Yours” are planning a missionary trip for February.

The concert featured gospel singers and bands including Les Deronettes, Limage Pierre, Philemon Polycarpe, Marcel Victor, and 1199SEIU member Manio Colas.

“I’m singing about God and love and how we as human beings must spread the love of God,” said Manio, a union member at Tower Hill Nursing Home in Canton. “I sang ‘Jesus the Redemeer.’ It was wonderful for me. It was very spiritual. I was happy to be there.”

Kilra Hylton, an 1199SEIU PCA and former member political organizer, also enjoyed the event.

“It was nice. It was spiritually oriented. It was very inspiring with the music and the spiritual aspect of everything. My favorite part was the singing.”

More than $2100 was raised for the event.
