1199SEIU Calls On Governor Hochul To Pass Robert Brooks Bill Following Disheartening Verdict

October 21, 2025

“We again extend our deepest condolences to Robert Brooks family. Mr. Brooks’ son is a proud healthcare worker and member of 1199SEIU. We all witnessed Robert’s brutal murder on video for the world to see, yet the decision made by the jury today is painful and difficult to understand.

Today’s verdict is another example of a broken system that does not protect black or brown people, but continues to perpetuate historical stereotypes. Our prison system must change to protect those it is met to serve. All lives must have the same value in the justice system and punishment must be equally enforced for those who do harm and for those who stand by and do nothing to intervene.

The members of 1199 vow to work towards systemic changes to prevent inhumane tactics in our prison systems and to win justice for Robert Brooks and his family.

We call on New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul to pass the entire omnibus package already passed by the legislature called the Robert Brooks bill preventing violence against inmates that includes 24/7 fixed camera coverage, and timely notice of death to their families,” said Tracey Harrison, 1199SEIU Vice-President Rochester Corning.
