July 11, 2021

The 450,000 healthcare workers of 1199SEIU, United Healthcare Workers East, are saddened and outraged by the recent assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. We wish his widow, Haiti’s First Lady Martine Moïse, a speedy recovery and send our deepest condolences to the Moïse family and all of Haiti.

1199SEIU stands with the people of Haiti and with the thousands of Haitian members in our Union. We share with them their deep concern for their families and loved ones during this time of upheaval. In no uncertain terms, we condemn this act of cowardice and urge Haiti’s leadership to do all it can to protect Haiti’s people and end the ongoing violence there.

Our Union is deeply proud of our members’ roots in Haiti and the country’s history as a beacon of freedom for the enslaved and oppressed. Alongside our allies, we are committed to supporting the Haitian people in their efforts to insure justice for their slain leader. And we will lend our voices to every effort to help rebuild a Haiti that is democratic, equitable and secure for every Haitian citizen and their families.
