Statement of Yvonne Armstrong, President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East
January 7, 2026
“Every day, the healthcare workers of 1199SEIU work side-by-side with NYSNA nurses to deliver lifesaving care to New Yorkers. Nurses are a pillar of our healthcare system and both need and deserve adequate staffing, workplace safety, quality benefits and good jobs to provide the highest level of compassionate care.
“At this time of unprecedented cuts to Medicaid and other healthcare programs by Republican leaders in Washington, D.C., healthcare workers should not bear the brunt of funding shortfalls. More than ever, we need stability in our healthcare system, which means investing in the type of good healthcare jobs which are fundamental to the wellbeing of caregivers and the communities they serve.
“1199SEIU calls on hospital management to bargain in good faith with NYSNA, refrain from committing unfair labor practices, and sign fair contracts that honor nurses’ contributions. It is vital that nurses’ voices are heard so they can continue to uphold the quality care that New Yorkers depend on.”
