Statement of 1199SEIU President Yvonne Armstrong on the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson

February 17, 2026

“The healthcare workers of 1199SEIU mourn the passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson, an extraordinary leader whose contributions to the labor and civil rights movements bridged generations.

“Over many decades, Rev. Jackson was a champion for healthcare— marching at 1199 picket lines in the 1980s to win organizing rights for tens of thousands of homecare workers, pressing for universal healthcare through his presidential campaigns and the Rainbow/PUSH coalition, and to helping secure passage of the Affordable Care Act.

“He knew that a just society cannot be attained without a commitment to healthcare equity, international solidarity, and multiracial democracy, and he selflessly dedicated his life in pursuit of these goals.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Rev. Jackson’s family, his loved ones, and all who were touched by his remarkable life.”
