Statement from George Gresham, president of 1199SEIU -- the nation’s largest healthcare union -- on Maya Wiley’s strong showing in ‘Round One’ of the Democratic primary

June 23, 2021

"Today, we saw the strength of healthcare workers determined to mobilize for the change we all need. 1199’s Executive Council unanimously voted to endorse Maya in February, and promptly jumped into action mobilizing member volunteers, and eligible to voters to make their voices heard in the voting booth.

"These frontline heroes have been battling COVID-19 for 15 months, but still made time to make hundreds of thousands of phone calls, knock on tens of thousands of doors, and text every single 1199 member in New York City. They hosted community parties and rallies, all in the name of supporting change and a city that works for all of us. They donated to our political action fund to ensure that the messages of community protection, community care, and affordable housing were front and center in all conversations on how to move our city forward.

"Just as they have for the last 15 months, 1199ers left it all on the field, and New York City is better for it. As we await the final vote count, working people can and should feel confident in the impact of their collective voice, and the power it carries to create the city we all know is possible. 1199’s healthcare heroes can be proud of their strength, determination, and ability to unite and fight for what they deserve."
