Rochester resident Flip Polizzi Rivera is forced to remain in nursing home, despite buying a house, because he cannot find home care

New York currently faces worst home care shortage in the nation

ROCHESTER, NY — Assemblymember Sarah Clark will tomorrow join home care advocates and Rochester resident Flip Polizzi Rivera to call for an end to New York’s worst home care shortage in the nation. Polizzi, who currently resides in a nursing home, cannot move into the house he purchased for himself because he cannot find home care workers due to the shortage. Press conference attendees will include Rochester home care consumers, workers, and advocates calling for an end to the home care shortage by passing the Fair Pay for Home Care Act. Research has shown low wages are the single largest driving factor creating the shortage.

Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Association of New York State With New York’s 65+ population slated to grow 25% in the next 20 years, the workforce shortage is projected to increase exponentially: New York will have more than 600,000 home care job openings by 2026. Additionally, research has found that recovering Covid patients fare far better in home care than nursing homes. Fair Pay for Home Care would more than pay for itself through increased spending, job creation and moving home care workers off of social assistance.
