It is self-evident why most seniors' first preference is to remain at home for as long as possible, to be cared for by family or a professional caregiver in a familiar, loving environment. Yet there often comes a time in life, due to declining health or the lack of an available family caregiver, where seeking 24/7 care at skilled nursing facility becomes the last, best option.

This week, hundreds of 1199 SEIU hospital workers and students conducted a petition walk at NYU Tisch, delivering nearly 3,000 signatures from 1199 caregivers, and a letter to Dr. Robert I. Grossman, Dean and Chief Executive Officer of NYU Langone Health, demanding that a written guarantee be given that NYU will not seek to withdraw from the 1199 health, pension, child care and education funds in the union’s successor contract.

For a period of 40 years, something managed to keep inequality in check in the United States. From 1940 to 1980, the richest 1 percent took home 9 percent of the wealth generated by the economy. Today, just as they did in the 1920s, the top 1 percent grabs about double that share. Surprisingly, the cause of this midcentury “Great Compression” has been largely neglected by economists, with many of them casually dismissing the role of unions.

New York, NY – Columbia University continues its attack on unions and on April 24th its teaching and research assistants went on strike. The strike was held from April 24-30. With the backing of city and state labor organizations, demonstrations are continuing to take place at the college. However, Columbia University is still refusing to recognize and bargain with United Auto Workers Local 2110’s Graduate Workers Union.

Bickering over the release of tax returns happens outside of the White House, it seems. Once again, Gov. Andrew Cuomo called for his primary opponent, Cynthia Nixon, to release her tax returns Thursday. Nixon, who’s already promised to release the information, took shots at the cost of attending a Cuomo fundraiser while one of the governor’s consultants called Nixon a “Prosecco-sipping Manhattanite masquerading as a progressive.”
