325 Utopia Home Care Workers Join 1199SEIU

April 24, 2012

In an overwhelming victory this April, 325 home health aides with Utopia Home Care in Queens, NY, voted to join 1199SEIU. By uniting together, these workers expect to achieve a better future for themselves and their families. They are working toward job improvements including fairness and respect, educational opportunities, workplace protections and a voice in client care.

“I’m excited for our Union,” said Catherine Charles, who has worked with Utopia since 1999. “Together, we will achieve fairer salaries and better working conditions. I am also excited about 1199’s educational opportunities since I am thinking of furthering my career by becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant.”

Rose Schello, who has worked with Utopia for six years, called the victory “a step forward for my coworkers and me. Now, we will be able to voice our opinions about improvements in our workplace. Previously, we did not have a voice in the decision-making process. I am hopeful that we will achieve job security, educational opportunities and better pay.”

With more than 70,000 home health aides, home attendants and housekeepers, the Homecare Division is 1199’s largest and fastest growing division.
