Standing Together, Caring For Each Other

October 12, 2017

In another humanitarian response to help those devastated by the horrific storms in the Caribbean, 1199SEIU hosted a terrific event, STANDING TOGETHER, CARING FOR EACH OTHER.

Joyce Neil, 1199SEIU Executive Vice President for the NYU hospital system, who has family members in the US Virgin Islands, said: “In our union we know that our members lives extend well beyond the workplace. When disaster strikes our families and communities, we’re ready to dig deep to help in whatever way we can.”

Elise Laviscourt, 1199SEIU organizer, who has family in Antigua, added: “When Hurricane Irma struck Barbuda causing tremendous damage and then Hurricane Jose was on its way, the entire population had to be evacuated to neighboring Antigua. This donation from 1199 will help the islanders to rebuild the two schools on Barbuda.”

We presented representatives of the Virgin Islands Freshwater "Yankees" Association, Inc, with a $10,000 donation to support the USVI medical program in their triage centers and $10,000 to Antiguans & Barbudans for Constitutional Reform & Education, toward the rebuilding of the only primary and high school in Barbuda.
