Florida Caregivers Picket with Power: ‘Ten Cents Don’t Make No Sense!’

January 1, 1970

Nearly 200 caregivers and community supporters picketed in St. Petersburg and Miami on April 10th to protest Greystone Healthcare Management’s practice of understaffing its nursing homes and underpaying its workers.

“Greystone’s wage increase offer is a waste of our time,” said Joyce Sutton, a CNA at North Rehab Center in St. Petersburg. “We go the extra mile every day so our residents are comfortable. We have to do more with less every day and we always feel behind on our work. We just want to be paid well enough to support our families and keep up with the rising cost of living.”

Overworked and underpaid caregivers are struggling to afford basic needs, like food, bills and health insurance.

“Three years we have gone without a raise,” said Marie Gonzalez, a CNA at North Beach Rehabilitation Center in North Miami Beach. “My co-workers and I have to juggle our bills just to make ends meet. Costs are going up, but our wages stay the same. Greystone is only offering us a ten cents raise. It’s insulting!”

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson told the company in a letter, “One way to ensure that the needs of your most vulnerable clients are being met with superior service is to take care of your hardworking and dedicated employees.”
