Maryland/DC Retirees and Seniors are Up and At ‘Em!

March 31, 2013

The Maryland/DC Retirees and Seniors are a growing group within the 1199SEIU family. The group engages working and retired seniors in the Maryland/DC region in a full range of political and social activities, and is actively expanding its membership. Queen Byas is a member of the Retirees and Seniors group. As a cashier at St. Joseph Medical Center for 25 years, she first became involved with the Union during the 2012 Obama re-election campaign. She enjoyed the community outreach so much that she decided to become more active with the Union. As co-chair of the Retirees and Seniors hospitality committee, Mrs. Byas is in charge of distributing information, reminding group members of upcoming events, and coordinating food at meetings. “I don’t think older people should ever be bored,” Mrs. Byas says. “We have all kinds of activities for seniors.” Members of the Retirees and Seniors group have participated in many activities with the union, such as the recent Washington, DC immigration rally and our annual Legislative Action Day.
