Health Care for All

Dear Sisters & Brothers,

As a health care worker and concerned constituent, I am asking that you fight proposed budget cuts to the National Institute of Health (NIH), the country’s medical research agency. Work funded by NIH leads to longer, healthier lives for millions of people. Illnesses that were once considered fatal are now treatable and manageable as a result of the many innovative advances of NIH research institutions.

Universities, hospitals and research institutions depend on NIH to hire laboratory personnel and to train scientists. NIH funds close to 50,000 grants annually, and 325,000 scientists at over 3,000 research and teaching institutions, including John Hopkins, Columbia, and Harvard Universities.

Any cuts to NIH will negatively impact medical innovation for many years to come. We know that medical research is crucial to combatting and finding cures for diseases that would otherwise kill millions of Americans each year. Therefore, funding medical research to improve health should be one of our nation’s highest priorities.

We fully support reducing ournation’s deficit. But we do not believe, however, that cutting NIH is a viable option. These cuts will ultimately stymie other important areas such as further advances in health care treatment, and continued job growth in one of the few growing industries despite a worsening economy. No matter the economic climate, people will continue to become ill and because of NIH we will be able to save lives for generations. We must continue this work.

Thank you for your attention.
