Interested in joining 1199SEIU?
At 1199SEIU, we’re guided by a mission to achieve quality healthcare and good jobs for all. With over 450,000 members working in nursing homes, homecare agencies, hospitals, and community clinics, by joining 1199SEIU, you’ll be a part of the largest and fastest growing union of healthcare workers nationwide.
1199 members have fought for and won contracts with real improvements including paid time off, educational opportunities, and better working conditions.
But joining 1199SEIU means more than a voice on the job. From the Fight for $15, to advocating to protect funding for Medicaid, joining 1199 means having a voice in city government, state government and in Washington D.C.
In recent years, as workers nationwide rose up to demand a living wage, 1199 members fought hard to win a $15 minimum wage for all workers in New York, Massachusetts, Maryland and New Jersey.
Currently in New York City the minimum wage is $15.00 an hour. Long Island and Westchester Counties will reach $15.00 by the end of 2021. By the end of 2020 the minimum wage in the rest of the state will be $12.50 with a state wage board deciding what will happen next. In Massachusetts an increase to the minimum wage was passed in June of 2018 with increases until 2023 when the wage will be $15.00. In New Jersey, the state approved increases to $15.00 by 2024. In Maryland legislation was passed in March of 2019 that sets the stage for increases to $15.00 in 2025. All of these victories were made possible through the hard work and persistence of 1199 members.
We are continuing to grow and build the most effective voice for our patients, our families and each other.
More than 3,000 healthcare workers voted to join 1199 in 2019 in almost every region of the union. This includes over 1200 healthcare workers from NYU Winthrop, located on Long Island, who joined their NYU colleagues as 1199 members. Over 200 service workers at Health Alliance in Kingston and another 200 service workers at New York Eye and Ear Hospital also joined our union in 2019. In homecare, nearly 300 home health aides from Reliance Home Care voted for respect on the job, affordable healthcare and job security by joining with 1199.
2020 is also proving to be an important year for homecare workers fighting for a better future as 1200 CDPAP homecare workers at Allen Homecare have recently chosen to be represented by 1199. The ability of healthcare workers to join in 1199 and negotiate with their employer is how working people gain a voice at work and the power to shape their working lives.
