At Heritage at Falmouth Nursing Home in Cape Cod, union members voted to join 1199SEIU and have a voice on the job.

The new two year contract will grant union members respect and dignity, a grievance procedure, no discipline without just cause, a five percent wage increase over two years, improved educational benefits, reduced cost on prescription benefits, improved recognition of seniority, and new vacation language.

“I’m very excited. We feel like we have some job security, respect, and dignity,” said Deb Nelson, a personal care assistant at the facility for the last seven years. “What we’re really excited about is the grievance procedure. Before we were at-will employees and now we have job security.”

Donna Johnson, a housekeeper at Heritage at Falmouth, was excited that that management no longer has the power to act unilaterally. “More than anything, I like the fact that management has to follow the rules of the contract,” she said.
