1199SEIU and the NAACP have joined to sponsor Get Down for Democracy, a voter registration concert on October 12 in Locust Hill, Virginia.
While 1199 has no active membership in Virginia-though some retired members live there-dozens of union members have volunteered to work in the state this month to help re-elect President Obama. In addition, the Maryland/DC Division of the union is sending busloads of Weekend Warriors-member volunteers- to Virginia every Saturday until Election Day.
The concert features the platinum R and B band GQ and gospel singer WIllie Rogers. Admission to the concert is either by showing one's voter ID card or by registering to vote on the spot.
With the re-election of President Obama at stake, the endgame of the campaigns is focused on a handful of so-called battleground states. Virginia is seeing one of the fiercest of these battles. Traditionally part of the Republicans' "solid south" since the enactment of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts half a century ago, the state went for President Obama in 2008. Both the Obama and Romney campaigns are fighting for every Virginia vote.f
