(Iselin, NJ) New Jersey nursing home caregivers, members of 1199SEIU, the powerful healthcare workers union will continue their series of informational pickets outside of the facilities where they provide direct care, nourishment and support services to the frail and elderly. The workers are in contract negotiations with their employers and asking for fair wages and benefits.

Gillian Dookie, a C.N.A. who works in the pediatric of wing at the Wanaque Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation, is pregnant and expecting next month. “I love the babies I care for. Now it’s more important than ever that I have good wages and benefits so I can care for my new baby.”

“We are simply asking for what we need to take care of ourselves and our families, at the same time we care for our residents,” said Vicki Morgan, a certified nursing assistant at Barnegat Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, one of the facilities where the workers will be picketing on Friday. “We are the backbone of the nursing home.”

Dookie and Morgan are two of four thousand 1199SEIU members in New Jersey whose contract is about to expire. The workers, at more than 30 nursing homes across the entire state spanning from the northernmost border to southern New Jersey, have come together in a campaign called, “Voices For Quality Care and Good Jobs-The Heart of New Jersey.”
