Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865 the news landed that the Civil War was over and that the enslaved were now free, two years after the emancipation proclamation.

• More than fifty-three 1199SEIU healthcare employers in the Hudson Valley alone have made Juneteenth a paid premium holiday.

• President Joe Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday.

• Both New York State and New York City have declared Juneteenth a holiday.

• Workers at private companies such as Allstate, Citigroup, JC Penney, Nike and Target have Juneteenth as a paid holiday. WHERE’S NUVANCE?
