Florida - After the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued a letter conditionally approving Florida’s Medicaid waiver, Monica Russo, executive vice president of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, issued the following statement:

“The federal government has shown that it can work cooperatively with the State to allow flexibility and innovation when it comes to the future of Medicaid by conditionally approving a waiver that moves almost all Medicaid recipients into managed care. However, the work of reform is not complete, not while more than a million hardworking Florida residents still lack access to quality, affordable healthcare. We call on Governor Scott and the Legislature to do what is right for our state and expand Medicaid as provided for in the Affordable Care Act, because it will save lives, create jobs and strengthen Florida’s economy.

"As the largest healthcare local in Florida, 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East is a leading voice for finding innovative ways to ensure that all Floridians have access to affordable quality healthcare.”

Representing more than 23,000 healthcare workers throughout Florida and 370,000 workers across Massachusetts, New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Florida, and Washington, D.C., 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East is the largest and fastest-growing healthcare union in America. Our mission is to achieve affordable, high quality healthcare for all. 1199SEIU is part of the 2.1 million member Service Employees International Union.
