Not Accepting Medicaid Expansion Puts Florida Families Last

Miami, FL - After Florida Governor Rick Scott released his budget, Monica Russo, executive vice president of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and president of Service Employees International Union Florida State Council (SEIU Florida), issued the following statement:
“Today, Governor Scott officially proposed his budget, “Florida Families First.” However, when it comes to Florida’s hardworking families who can’t afford health insurance, they are apparently last. The governor said that today is not the day to make a decision as to whether Florida expands Medicaid, even though the federal government is footing the bill. This should be a major concern to all Floridians. Medicaid expansion is a win-win – It will save lives by providing coverage to an estimated 1.2 million hardworking Floridians that cannot afford health insurance, create more than 65,000 healthcare jobs, virtually eliminate uncompensated care in our hospitals and help stimulate and grow our still-struggling economy. There should be no question or hesitation on the part of our elected leaders when it comes to building a healthier, stronger Florida.”
