Healthcare workers, veterans, students and faith-leaders, joined by Congresswoman Corrine Brown, held a press conference on April 15 calling on Speaker Will Weatherford and his colleagues in the Florida House to stop blocking $51 billion of our federal tax dollars to expand healthcare in Florida to 1,000,000 people.

This kicked off a week of action by Floridians across the state who support Medicaid expansion.

After the press conference, the coalition marched straight to Speaker Weatherford's office and wouldn't leave until he met with them.

Eventually, he did, but he continues to play politics while hardworking Florida families suffer without healthcare.

A couple days later, sixty nursing home workers and members of 1199SEIU Florida wearing "NO Band Aid - Medicaid Expansion is the Only Cure" T-Shirts lobbied in Tallahassee, including Chester Frazier who had to cut his own hours to work part time so he could qualify for Medicaid for his wife's cancer treatment.

With 1199SEIU members keeping a watchful eye on the Senate committee members, Senator Negron's compromise bill, which is a step in the right direction, passed unanimously, but caregivers are still standing firm in support of Medicaid expansion.

On April 18, one hundreds SEIU nurses gathered for a press conference to tell legislators, 'show us the money' and accept federal funding that will expand healthcare to more than one million Floridians.
