Boy, oh boy, does 1199 know how to throw a party!
Held at the Sheraton Hotel Times Square in New York City, our union’s 2013 holiday party was nothing less than fabulous. Delegates from all over came together; we each brought a toy part of a union toy drive for underprivileged children.

A few of my E800 colleagues and I attended our first 1199SEIU leadership conference, and, boy, was it more than we could have hoped for! The location at National Harbor was beautiful. The food, fellowships, speakers, and workshops were all excellent! We all walked away feeling enlightened as to how we make things happen with our union and energized to keep our workplace moving forward.

Buffalo, NY – Kaleida healthcare workers represented by CWA and 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East announced Friday they will not be extending their contract past the Sunday, July 31st deadline following two previous extensions. Citing the strong progress that has been made in the last four months of bargaining, committee members instead plan to meet five days a week with Kaleida representatives beginning Monday, August 1, to reach a fair contract for workers as soon as possible. WHY: More than 100 nursing home workers at Corning Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing in Corning will hold an informational picket on Wednesday, July 13th from 1:00pm-4:00pm in demand for better wages. Long-term caregivers have been working without a union contract since May 31st following a one-month extension of their 18-month contract. Caregivers represented by 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East are asking for a $15 minimum wage for service workers, higher start rates for new employees, and standardized wage scales based on experience. Caregivers say wage improvements within all four ownership groups (covering 9 facilities) are needed to retain experienced workers to care for residents, but also to recruit new workers to help with critically understaffed facilities. “As so many of us have feared, the Republican-appointed justices on the Supreme Court have reversed Roe vs. Wade, gutting reproductive freedoms, protections and healthcare for tens of millions of women in the United States. This will be especially tragic in states such as Florida with a legislature and governor who already have passed radical and intrusive limitations on women’s freedom and right to self-determination. Weeks before his death in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. addressed 1199’s Salute to Freedom Celebration at which he praised the Union for its “labor power plus soul power” strategy. Dr. King also called for a “massive civil disobedience campaign against economic inequality.” Read More
Hanna Duda has been an 1199 homecare worker with the Personal Touch agency for 22 years, since she first arrived in New York from Ukraine. She became a US citizen as soon as she could and quickly applied for family-sponsored visas for her daughters, Liliya Kupchyshyna and Halyna Palis. It took ten years for her youngest daughter, Palis, to be allowed to join her. Read More
