At Hammond House Nursing Home in Worcester, 1199SEIU members are in the process of negotiating a first contract with management. Unfortunately, since members voted to join the union, management has not been amicable to negotiating a contract at the facility. Sunbridge, the management team that owns the nursing home, stalled negotiations and have made it difficult for union members to settle a first contract.

Union members mobilized and increased pressure on management to bargain a contract. Petitions were passed around, several marches on the boss were held, sticker days were held at the home and other Sun facilities in September, and union members also threatened to hold an informational picket at the end of November. Union members from other nursing homes across the country supported Hammond House workers with a national sticker day.

The Sunbridge nursing home chain was undergoing a change of management with all Sun homes being purchased by the Genesis nursing home chain.

Thanks to the pressure created by union members, Genesis agreed to sit down with union members in December.

“We’re hoping for better benefits, better pay. When I say benefits, I mean insurance, dental, and also vacations and sick time. We’re very hopeful that management will work with us for this contract. It has been a long time. We expected to have a contract by now,” said Rose Ngigi, an LPN at Hammond House.
