1199SEIU this month released a joint statement with the New York State Nurses Association declaring their opposition to the Keystone XL, a 1,700-mile pipeline that would transport for eventual export 830,000 barrels of dirty tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries.
“We are half a million nurses and healthcare workers and we declare our strong support for policies that address the dangers of climate change and prioritize public health, green jobs and renewable energy,” the statement reads.
It adds: The pipeline would lock us into even more reliance on the use of dirty fuel, and he overwhelming evidence shows it would push us inexorably closer to catastrophe.”
Instead of the pipeline the statement proposes the use of renewable energy and a dramatic shift towards a sustainable green economy and green jobs.
The statement also affirms the two unions’ intention “to mobilize thousands of members to the People’s Climate March near the UN on Sept. 21.
