New Study Outlines Path to Safeguard Quality Patient Care and Healthcare Jobs in Lynn

For-Profit Owners, Upstate Service Group, Refuse to Provide Affordable Health and Retirement Benefits to Nursing Home Workers

1199SEIU’s Professional and Technical workers covered under the contract with the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes achieved a major victory on October 18 when they reached an agreement with the hospital association guaranteeing all Pro Tech workers a minimum of two paid days off per year. These days off can be used to attend conferences, seminars, or other forms of continuing education for their licenses or certifications.

Flint isn’t the only one! Like too many cities and towns across the country, the drinking water supply in Newburgh, NY has been contaminated with Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS), a toxic chemical associated with numerous health problems. Thankfully, the city has since transitioned to a clean water source and the drinking water is now safe, but those who have consumed the water over the course of years, if not decades, were likely exposed.

On Thursday, October 6, 2016 workers at Elderwood Grand Island Nursing Home in Erie County voted YES to join us in the fight for higher wages, fairness and respect on the job. Workers made to the decision to join after years of deteriorating working conditions.

Participants in this year’s Youth Mentoring Program (YMP) celebrated their growth and achievement with a celebration held Aug. 18 at Manhattan’s New York Academy of Medicine.

The economic crisis of 2007- 2008 was precipitated largely by a collapse of the sub-prime home mortgage market; these loans were peddled disproportionately to low income home buyers who were issued unfavorable terms—often by unscrupulous lenders. Many of these affected borrowers were eligible for standard, prime-rate mortgages, but because of lack of buyer education and lender oversight, the industry was rife with abuse.

After a fraught organizing campaign that involved firings and unfair labor practice charges, and drew a passionate community rally and at least one on line petition, workers at Maryland’s Chase Brexton Health Care on Aug. 25 voted overwhelmingly in favor of representation by 1199SEIU. The vote was 87-9.
