New Study Outlines Path to Safeguard Quality Patient Care and Healthcare Jobs in Lynn

When management at two New Jersey nursing homes proposed to cut back on sick time and other benefits for caregivers, 1199SEIU members and nursing homes residents sprung into action to defend good jobs by picketing at their facilities on September 28 and 29.

Callen-Lorde workers have ratified their first contract with 1199SEIU. The terms of the three-year contract include improvements to employee wages, a new pay scale and several position-specific pay differentials. Additionally, Callen-Lorde has agreed to participate in the union’s Job Security and Training and Upgrading Funds. Nearly 200 Callen-Lorde employees, who are dedicated to caring for the LGBT community in NYC —including nurses, doctors, social workers, front desk and call center staff, and many others—at the center’s two locations in Chelsea voted to join 1199 in January 2015.

As President Obama held a Leaders Summit on Refugees during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, more than 150 members of 1199SEIU came together for a Labor Round Table on the refugee crisis at the union’s headquarters on the other side of town.

On September 20, 2016, the NYS Department of Health held a public meeting in Newburgh, NY to discuss the consequences and solutions for dealing with the water supply, which has been contaminated with the highly toxic chemical Perflurooctane Sulfonate (PFOS). On September 21, 1199 members at University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown—formerly Maryland General Hospital—voted 136 to 7 in support of a strong new contract, winning significant gains for the membership and a path to $15 hourly minimum wages.
