When management at two New Jersey nursing homes proposed to cut back on sick time and other benefits for caregivers, 1199SEIU members and nursing homes residents sprung into action to defend good jobs by picketing at their facilities on September 28 and 29.

Callen-Lorde workers have ratified their first contract with 1199SEIU. The terms of the three-year contract include improvements to employee wages, a new pay scale and several position-specific pay differentials. Additionally, Callen-Lorde has agreed to participate in the union’s Job Security and Training and Upgrading Funds. Nearly 200 Callen-Lorde employees, who are dedicated to caring for the LGBT community in NYC —including nurses, doctors, social workers, front desk and call center staff, and many others—at the center’s two locations in Chelsea voted to join 1199 in January 2015.

On September 20, 2016, the NYS Department of Health held a public meeting in Newburgh, NY to discuss the consequences and solutions for dealing with the water supply, which has been contaminated with the highly toxic chemical Perflurooctane Sulfonate (PFOS). There are 1500 members of 1199SEIU in Newburgh, not to mention, thousands of their patients, family and friends.
