Florida healthcare workers will also launch the Every Minute Counts Campaign which focuses on access to quality care for the elderly in our nursing homes

St. Petersburg, FL – Today, SEIU President Mary Kay Henry will join 300 Florida healthcare workers at the 1199SEIU Joint Delegate’s Assembly in addressing Florida’s joblessness and its impact on the working class. Mary Kay Henry and other union leaders will speak to the importance of creating jobs in the healthcare industry to rebuild Florida’s economy and ensure access to quality healthcare for all.

"I am pleased to be here today to support 1199SEIU Florida healthcare workers in their call for good, quality healthcare jobs and access to healthcare for all," said Mary Kay Henry, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) President. "Florida has been hit hard by the recession. Many families are struggling just to put food on the table. The Every Minute Counts campaign speaks to the dire need for a major shift in priorities in Florida. People are suffering while corporate CEOs are profiting. There has never been a more important time to unite and make our voices heard."

Members will also launch the Every Minute Counts Campaign, which is focused on educating the families of nursing home residents and Florida’s legislators on the importance of quality long term care and job creation in the healthcare field. The goal is to ensure that family members of nursing home residents have the tools they need to safeguard their loved ones’ care. Members will work to inspire state legislators to reinstate safe staffing levels in nursing homes back to the landmark standards passed in 2001, which were weakened last year. The campaign will advocate for the creation of quality healthcare jobs and will fight the continued cuts to vital healthcare programs and services.

“As front line healthcare workers, we know too well what happens when there is not enough bedside care for our patients. There is no reason for our elders to suffer,” said Dot Perkins, Certified Nurse Assistant in Tampa Bay. “Our president is calling for corporations to create jobs and there is money available to create good healthcare jobs in Florida. Our patients need quality care and our working class needs quality jobs. We must make this happen for the sake of the people.”
