Eutaw St., Baltimore, Md.BALTIMORE—With one day left before the official deadline for Marylanders to enroll in private health insurancethrough the Maryland Health Connection, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will lead a press conference highlighting the law’s successes and encouraging local residents to sign up for insurance.The event will be held at 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. Rawlings-Blake will be joined by Marylanders who’ll share their experiences gaining better, more affordable health coverage under the new law. Among them is Barbara Gruber, an adjunct professor whosepre-existing conditions resulted in exorbitant medical costs. After falling ill and going into debt, Gruber considered filing for bankruptcy. But under theAffordable Care Act (ACA), she was able to enroll in a new, affordable planthat lowered her insurance premiums by over $400 a month.Leaders of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and other organizations helping with enrollment in Maryland will also be on hand to share the positive on-the-ground outcomes they’ve been witnessing.As of March 15, 44,836 Marylanders have enrolled in private health plans through the exchange.
